While waiting to interview Glen Washington, DaintyCrew.com were lucky enough to be in attendance at a sound check at the Birmingham Academy (formerly The Hummingbird) in Birmingham, England. As we sat waiting we heard some strong vocals, which didn't sound dissimilar to those of Sanchez.
The sweet lyrics captured our attention and as DaintyCrew.com learned over the balcony we excited asked those in attendance who it was on the mic... The response was, "Oh that's Antonio, he's the support for Glen Washington and Frankie Paul later".
Maurice Anthony Silvera was born over 26 years ago in Portland, Jamaica. Easily distracted from his school work he would much prefer to beat his desk and sing. His early influences were from Beres Hammond and he officially began singing at the age of 16.
He sang under the stage name of Singing Maurice and he went on tour to Austria, where he believes he has received the best response of his career so far and then onto London. While on tour he hooked up with a producer and he advised him that he couldn't work with the name, Singing Maurice and instead he choose the name, Antonio. On his next visit to the studio people began to catch onto the name and the name just stuck.
Antonio has had a lot of experience performing on stage as well as singing on Jamaican sound systems, Mafia 5, Prince Ajax and Heartbeat. One of his most memorable experiences was while he was performing in Germany. While on stage "a girl draw me off the stage". I am sure he won't forget that in a hurry.
He released his first single in 1996 entitled, 'Woman A You Me Want'. He pens many of his lyrics and Al Campbell has written some. Like many Jamaican reggae singers he has also covered a few songs.
Antonio has worked with a few producers including Tony Philip from Ruff Cutt, Danny Ray and he's currently working with Trevor Juggling T. He enjoys listening to Beres Hammond, Luciano, Buju Banton, Freddy McGregor and Glen Washington.
His most successful single and the title of his album is 'So Many Signs' and at the time of this interview Antonio advised that he was working on a new album but couldn't provide a release date or title.
Right now Antonio is not too impressed with reggae music, "I met reggae music at this stage and I can't see where it's improving. It's like it's just stabilized to me but I believe one day reggae music will get bigger still".
Antonio's message was, "Give thanks to God and most definitely to all my fans out there because without my fans Antonio could never be Antonio so a just love every time".
