Delly Ranks - Passing The Hennessey

Delly Ranks Since we last spoke to
Delly Ranks back in August 2000, he has been busy with his music as well as some production work, so whilst we were in Jamaica over Christmas and New Year 2001, we thought we would see what this talented young man has been doing...

Delly has been involved in production since the infamous 'Headache' rhythm because he was one of the producers of the 'Headache 2'. He stated, "I produced the Beenie Man song 'Crazy Notion'" alongside Louis "Flabba" Malcolm. This started him off on some co-production and then he moved onto making his own rhythms including the 'Hennessey' and the 'Molasses'. He says making music is "a vibe you know" and that he gets his ideas when in the studio playing with the drum machine and then it just comes naturally.

Delly has his own music production company called Pure Music Production that he established in Mach 2001 and on which he produced a remake of the Old Broom rhythm featuring Louis Culture, Luciano, Tony Rebel and more artists of that calibre. The Hennessy has been his biggest and best project so far as he said, "It was getting a lot of play world-wide".

How he decides which artists to voice on the rhythms he creates is down to the rhythm as Delly said, "It speaks to you to tell you who supposed to be on it". So far he has worked with numerous people including Elephant Man, Sean Paul and even voiced himself on the Hennessy rhythm.

As a new producer, Delly does look up to some other more established people in the business and would love to work with Dave Kelly. He has however worked with Steely & Clevie, Donovan Germaine, Bobby Digital and Shocking Vibes. Delly would love to produce Bounty Killer and would also like to work with the R&B artist, Baby Face.

Delly would advise aspiring producers to "Be clean, don't be bad mind. Just be honest. Always ask the Father for whatever you want".

Musically, Delly has released a few tracks since his hit tune, 'Headache', including 'Work Round Dem' and 'What A Girl Can Wine' which was on VP Reggae Gold 2000. There was also 'Miss Call Me Too Often' and 'Independent Woman' which was on the Blue Drawers (Spanish Harlem) rhythm and it went into the charts in Hawaii.

Delly Ranks As yet Delly has not completed an album as he would prefer to do a total set of new tunes instead of a "compilation" of his already released tracks. He said, "I'm concentrating on doing major hit songs and hope a major label contacts me, we make a deal and make an album". At present Delly is not signed to a record label, but he would love to be on a major label as he said, "You can crossover, not only in Dancehall, but in other areas... We have to go all round with music from all boundaries".

For the future, Delly would like his label to become more well-known, open his own studio and help young artists. He would like his fans to know that he always works hard and for his fellow artists, "Put down de foolishness and let us just unite and move forward".

Obviously Delly is moving forward in leaps and bounds as he manages to juggle a DJ and production career as well as have a production label. Keep watching this space because Delly will no doubt fill it!
