Audio On DaintyCrew.com

What are Luciano's views on Sizzla and why was his UK tour in the early part of 2001 abruptly cancelled at the last minute? All this and more was answered by the Messenger in an interview when DaintyCrew.com managed to meet him during his recent Great Controversy Tour.

South Africa Celebrates

On April 26th 2002, South Africa celebrated the anniversary of it's first multi-racial elections. After years of apartheid, South Africa held their first elections that included all races voting in 1994 and the outcome of the election was that Nelson Mandela became president.

Gunshot in UK Dancehall

DaintyCrew.com were in attendance at the Online dance at Club La Mustiques in Aston, Birmingham, UK on Friday 26th April 2002. Although the venue was only half full the vibes were nice and Big John and Wayne Irie had both been playing upfront selections. As we were beginning to feel the good vibes of the dance we heard some commotion. People started panicking and were screaming whilst running through the venue. We calmly (well as calm as we could be considering the situation) headed for what we thought was the fire exit. When we reached the exit we realised to our dismay that it was padlocked and as we tried to think of our next move we heard a single gun shot sound. People were running towards us in the hope to fly the fire exit and we pointed out the padlock. We then noticed that the fire exit at the other side of the room had been opened so we left the venue through that.

This is just one of the many gun related incidents that have marred the UK in recent months. It has really reached the point where the community needs to co-operate with the police and vice-versa. We need more venues in the UK similar to the set up at The Ballroom, Marcus Garvey Centre in Nottingham where the police presence is apparent. In Bristol, the police also work in conjunction with those holding dances. These types of actions need to be implemented as a matter of urgency to deter violence at events and make innocent patrons of such events feel comfortable and safe once again.

At the time of going to press, DaintyCrew.com heard news reports that the man who was shot is in a serious condition.

McGregor's Big Ship Foundation Raffles Car To Fund School

Moved by the appalling conditions of the Haile Selassie secondary school in Jamaica, veteran vocalist, Freddie McGregor has dedicated himself to raise funds to improve the situation at the school. After many a brainstorming sessions, he was joined by Dr. Bob Hochstein of County Line Chiropractors and the Lora Robbins Memorial Scholarship Fund, who decided to purchase and donate a new Honda Civic to be raffled as a fundraising effort for the project.

The Kiwanis Club of Lauderdale Lakes and East Sunrise will join the effort, as members will sell raffle tickets, which will be drawn on Sunday, May 5, at the Rock Steady Meets Reggae Concert in Hialeah Park.

According to McGregor, "Although I did not attend the school, I think it is very important that we assist as much as possible, especially a school that bears his majesty's name." Working through his non-profit organization, Big Ship Foundation along with County Line Chiropractic Centres and the Lora Robbins Memorial Scholarship Fund they hope to raise enough funds to improve conditions at the school.

It is anticipated that Member of Parliament, the Honourable Portia Simpson will be on hand to draw the winning ticket at the concert. "We have invited the minister, as the school is in her constituency, and she is very excited about coming if her schedule allows it." Says Freddy, "If the minister is not available, we would love to have the headmistress of the school present."

The raffle is just a part of activities planned for the first week of May, when the Rock Steady Meets Reggae week will kick-off on Thursday, May 2 with the launch of Freddy McGregor's latest album, 'Anything For You' at a huge block party and free concert in Hollywood. Featured guests will be Sanchez, whose album 'Stays On My Mind' was recently released along with Lymie and his latest CD 'Conversation' among other performers.

On Friday the events will move to Pepper's Café in Ft. Lauderdale and will feature 'Three Masters in Action' veterans Winston "Merritone" Blake, Bunny "Soul Shack" Goodison and Gladdy "Wild Bunch" Parker. This is the first time these three DJs will appear together in South Florida and it is sure to generate some excitement.

Saturday, the Rock Steady Meets Reggae Dance Party will be at Stingerz Niteclub in Miramar and will feature popular DJs from both the Rock Steady and Reggae eras selecting the best dance music for party fans.

The action moves on to Hialeah Park & Race Track on Sunday, where a massive concert featuring the I-Threes, Maxi Priest, Ken Boothe, Leroy Sibbles, Phyllis Dillon, Admiral Bailey, U-Roy, Dobby Dobson, Ernie Smith Chaka Demus & Pliers, Freddy McGregor among others will take place.

Raffle tickets will go on sale within the next few days and will be available at all these events and all day at the concert right up to the drawing.

Ska Review

A visitor to this site, Fiesta Gal kindly provided her thoughts on a Ska event she recently attended….

I had the pleasure whilst on a short trip to England, to go to see a Ska Gig. Pauline Black, originally from the band The Selector, Jennifer Bellestar (Belle Stars) and Rhoda Dakar (Body Snatchers) have formed a band and call themselves the Ska Divas.

The venue was the Buttermarket in Shrewsbury. Buttermarket, holds a Jazz and Roots club on Thursday evenings, and have a wide selection of International Reggae and Jazz artists. It's a nice club with a warming atmosphere. The gig started with a local support Band; unfortunately I didn't catch the name. They had a front man who look very much like

Terry Hall (The Specials) and a fantastic saxophonist , only 16 years of age, who bought that (Rico) feeling to the audience. They managed to warm up the place very nicely.

The Divas came on the Stage looking great, Pauline Black dressed in a white suit sporting her Trilby hat, Rhoda Dakar with her stunningly coloured red hair and tonic suit, and Jennifer Bellestar in her sparkling colours.

The gig opened with a rendition of the first tune that Jennifer Bellestar ever purchased, which was Millie ' My Boy Lollipop'. A great rendition of the tune sang with Energy and Enjoyment.

The Divas then went on to Cover another Oldie but Goodie 'Carry GO Bring Come) originally performed by Derrick Morgan, and the bass rocked the place, the atmosphere was electric.

'Lets do Rock steady' the first ever tune to be released on the Two-Tone Label by the Body Snatchers was the first in a string of Hits performed by the Divas who have amassed over 300 weeks in The UK charts. Followed by other hits such as Too Much Pressure, on my Radio, Sign of the Times, Iko Iko.

The Three Ladies combined their musical talents and great personalities to make a very enjoyable evening. Apparently the first gig that they had performed together as a band, but I am sure the Divas will go on to make sure those great Ska tunes stay alive for a long time to come.

Well done Girls a great gig and its good to see that 'The Sisters are doing it for themselves'.

Fiestagal 18 April 02.

UK Unsigned Talent Quest Finals - London's Last Chance

The finals of the UK's biggest talent quest, UK Unsigned, is set to take place on Saturday June 1st. The venue is the newly built Stratford Circus Theatre, Theatre Square, Stratford, London, E15. There will be £3,000 worth of prizes to be won, along with the UK Unsigned Trophy. There will also be recording opportunities for the first, second and third placed winners from a newly formed record label, Theorem Records.

After 18 gruelling heats across the country over the past 6 months, we are finally going to witness who is the best vocal performer in the UK. Heats have been taking place throughout London in the south, Essex in the east, Wales in the West and Manchester in the north.

Singers have been scored out of ten for Presentation, Vocal Content, Originality and Overall Performance. In each heat we have chosen only one winner, and some heats have had over 30 performers (46 in Manchester).

The UK Unsigned Talent Quest is organised by the Society for the Advancement of British Arts (SABA) and has been running for three years. SABA is an arts charity with a remit of seeking to promote and develop UK based performers. They have been running annual showcases for the past 10 years all around the country.

Their most famous participant has been Richard Blackwood who starred in several of their events in the mid to late 90's. In fact he met his current manager at one of SABA's events at the Hilton Park Lane Hotel in 1996.

This year's UK Unsigned Final is being sponsored by the Army. This unlikely partnership between the Army and arts charity SABA has been formed to support their drive to show Army career examples within the field of music. "We are happy that the Army has agreed to support our finals because they offer a career option for young people with an interest in music"

There is one last chance for performers in London to enter. On Friday 31st May, 8pm, at the Rayners Hotel, Village Way East, Rayners Lane, HA2 the very last heat takes place to try and get in to the Grand Finals. The winner goes through to fill the very last place in the final the next day, but there will be representatives from Theorem Records who will be looking out for new signings. Admission is £8 on the door, but entrants need to call now to book their places to perform.

Call John Downie of SABA for more details on tel +44 (0)208 696 7003 /+44 (0)7050 369643.
