Ce'Cile Signs Album Deal

Ce’Cile, one of the few women in Dancehall, is continuously recognized for her releases. Since her self-produced marketing gimmicky tune, ‘Changez’ hit the streets of Jamaica, she’s consistently taken well thought out steps to solidifying her career in every way from her website, songs she records, shows she performances at, riddims she’s produced with Skatta and her own debut album.

We are delighted to announce that Ce’Cile has signed an album deal with Delicious Vinyl Records as well as recently signing management deal. The record company, Delicious Vinyl, is based in Los Angeles and is responsible for the debut success of Born Jamericans, Brand New Heavies, Tone Loc and Young MC. A cutting edge company with bold instincts, Delicious Vinyl is particularly eager at the prospect of introducing Ce’Cile into the American market and aiding her ascent to the top. Her highly anticipated debut album, Bad Gyal will see a fall 2003 release.

With so many great singles already recorded and released such as; ‘Can You Do The Wuk’ with Sean Paul on Jeremy Harding’s Liquid riddim, ‘Honey’ on the clappas riddim, ‘Weh U Up To’ on the Forensic, ‘Cherry Pie’ on the producer Call Me Shams (Richard Browne’s) Juice riddim, ‘Some Bwoy’ on the 20 Cent riddim and ‘Thinking Of It’ on the Jumbie, slimming down her album tracks has happily proved to be quite a task.

This debut album, Bad Gyal is a careful selection of strong songs that are both reflective of her personality and flexibility as an artist and even include some of her own production. Such songs slated for the album include; ‘Lovin It’ from English based producer Frenchie, ‘Murder’, ‘Give It To Me’ on the new Salsa riddim (Big Yard/Christopher Birtch), ‘Lift Me Up & Drop Me’ on the Tai Chi, ‘Do Me Dat’ and more!

Currently Ce’Cile is recording a video in Jamaica for local support of the new tune ‘Bare As She Dare’ on producer Skatta’s Coolie Dance riddim. There is also talk of recording a video for support of her feature on KC Jockey’s ‘Gwan Hype’ tune for his Gwan Hype riddim/Sweet Sadies Productions release. In addition, she’s wrapping up the final tracks for the album.

Kicking off album promotions, Ce’Cile will be performing at Irie Jamboree on August 24th – sponsored by Irie Jam and Power 105. She’ll be joining a strong cast of stars including; Baby Cham, Cobra, Lexxus, Lukie D, Mr. Easy, label mate Mr. Vegas, Richie Stevens, Sean Paul, Tony Curtis, Ward 21, Wayne Marshall and Vybz Kartel. Irie Jamboree is taking place at the Roy Wilkins Park in Queens New York. For more information on Ce’Cile you can visit her website www.cecileflava.com.

Bogus Bounty Killer UK Shows

”Bounty Killer wishes to make it clear to all his fans that the stage shows currently being advertised in Europe and the United Kingdom in September and October, starring the Warlord, are fraudulent. Please do not buy advance-purchase tickets for these shows, as you will end up disappointed and out of pocket. We understand that even Ticketmania are selling the tickets, but they too are unaware of the situation and are being contacted by Bounty Killer’s management.

We understand somebody called Richard Mason is apparently duping promoters and fans alike in these countries, claiming he can book and deliver Bounty Killer. Bounty Killer, nor any of his staff or legitimate booking agents have ever heard of Richard Mason and have certainly not entered into any business with him”.

Bounty understands his many fans are eager to see him return to those shores, but nothing happens before its time and you can check his web site - www.bountykiller.com - for details of when that will happen.’

Isley Brothers Due To Hit UK

The Isley Brothers, Rudolph, Ronnie and O'Kelly have been gospel shouters, Motown hitmakers, funk-rock fusionaries and late-nite, two-glasses-of-white-wine, you-and-your-lady balladeers. Along the way, they've had four decades' worth of top 10 R&B records.

Beginning in Cincinnati, they cut a few doo-wop discs before crashing the charts with the astonishingly raw gospel rewrite ‘Shout’ in '59, followed by the raving ‘Twist and Shout’ in '62. After more R&B rave-ups for a variety of labels, some of which feature a young guitarist named Jimi Hendrix, the Isleys moved to Motown, where they made three solid albums and one smash single, ‘This Old Heart of Mine.’ In 1969, they revived their own T-Neck label and resurfaced with a tough, funk-rock sound (‘It's Your Thing’). Adding younger brothers Ernie and Marvin, brother-in-law Chris Jasper and an unrelated drummer, they rocked even harder: Ernie's sidewinding fretwork on 1973's ‘Who's That Lady’ is one of the greatest guitar solos in all of pop. When funk began to fade, the Isleys began to focus on big bedroom ballads, racking up piles of gold and platinum discs. ‘Between The Sheets’ from '83 is typical of their sound, which has proven to be amazingly durable and widely imitated. For further proof, check out the current R&B charts.

O'Kelly Isley died from a heart attack in 1986. (Another singing brother, Vernon, died in a 1955 bike accident before the group had hits.) Ronald has recorded hit duets with his now-wife Angela Winbush and Rod Stewart; Ernie Isley and the Isley Jasper Isley trio have recorded separate efforts as well. The Isley Brothers were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1992.

Catch them live at Birmingham’s most prestigious venue The Symphony Hall on Saturday 20th September. Tickets start from £30 - £40 from the box office and usual outlets or book online www.necgroup.co.uk/boxoffice

Lovers Rock Reunion

Although love songs have always been staple fare in reggae, and other music, Lovers Rock as a genre did not emerge until the mid-70’s, chiefly in London.

Mixing Philly soul with sweet skanking rhythms, it was the antithesis of the roots reggae movements that provided non-Rasta reggae fans with something with which to identify in an era otherwise dominated by dub.

Early exponents such as 15-16-17, Jimmy Lindsay, Sonia and One Blood all sold incredibly well.

The critics reviled them for their sickly, barely trained harmonies and school girl/boy voices, but this truly working-class music was to be found in teenagers’ bedrooms in every British city centre.

There were few lovers chart hits; being Janet Kay’s ‘Silly Games’, Trevor Walters ’Love Me Tonight’ and Toyin Adekale ‘Here I go Again’, but the music thrived away from the mainstream music business.

Throughout the 80s and early 90s lovers’ rock has remained a largely underground music, while artists such as Winsome, Janet-Lee Davis, Vivian Jones and Lloyd Brown have built huge followings.

One international success has been Maxi Priest, who combined lovers with ragga, roots and soul to produce that long awaited breakthrough fusion.

Hence Talitha Voices and Authentic Real Music have collaborated to bring together some of the greatest lovers rock artistes of all time, past & present.

On Saturday, 20th September 2003 the Ocean Music Venue, 270 Mare Street, Hackney, E5 comes alive with artistes such as Janet-Lee Davis, Trevor Walters, 15.16.17, Tradition, Paulette Tajah, One Blood, Sonia, John McLean, Raymond Simpson, Jimmy Lindsay, Ciyo, Private Collection, Paul Dawkins, Barry Boom, Vivian Jones, Albion, Heptics, Lloyd Brown, J. Malcolm, Winsome, Sinclair and a special guest appearance by Ruddy Thomas. Compere’s for the evening will be Toyin Adekale and Michelle Gayle with backing from the Delroy Murray Band. After party music by Equation Road Show, Roy Medallion, Mr Passion and Cabbage Man.

Doors 9:00p.m. To 4:00a.m. Show time 11.30p.m. Tickets £17.50 standing and £20.00 seated plus a booking fee. Credit Card Bookings call 020 8205 5849 or the Box Office on 020 8533 0111. For Picture, Bio’s, Give away & More Information details below:

Ranking Miss P Presents…Sweet Harmony

Ranking Miss P, one of the UK's most respected and popular Jamaican music broadcasters, has compiled a memorable 2CD selection for Trojan. Ranking Miss P Presents…Sweet Harmony hit the streets on the 11th August and contains forty-three cuts of vocal gems from 1966 to 1990.

Harmony groups have long since played an important role in the national sound of Jamaica, with such notable acts as The Wailers and The Maytals tracing their origins back to the Ska era or the early Sixties. But it was the slower styling of Rocksteady from later that decade that gave rise to the Jamaican vocal groups era and it is from this golden age that this superbly compiled history of harmony acts begins. Featuring works by an array of leading groups from the past thirty years, this is undoubtedly one of the finest collections on Reggae vocal sounds ever released.

From Jamaican artists The Paragons, The Wailers, The Abyssinians, The Ethiopians, The Pioneers, The Heptones, The Mighty Diamonds, The Gladiators, Culture, and The Wailing Souls, to the British harmony groups Aswad, Matumbi, and Undivided Roots – all these and more are featured on this distinctive compilation, containing a number of cuts previously unavailable on CD.

Ranking Miss P Presents… Sweet Harmony is released in association with BBC London 94.9FM to commemorate her 18 years at the BBC.

Catch Ranking Miss P Thursdays from 8:00 to 10:00 pm (UK time) with Riddim & Blues on BBC London 94.9FM and online at www.bbc.co.uk/london.

Having recently enjoyed no less than 6 weeks in the UK charts with the single 'No Letting Go' reaching the dizzy heights of number 2 (No.1 in US and JA) - the first track released from his latest album 'No Holding Back' (out now on East West), Wayne Wonder embarks on a live UK show at Ocean, European tour, and live MOBO appearance this September. Following the success of 'No Letting Go' with its Diwali rhythm and catchy chorus Wayne has ventured into territory previously chartered by fellow dancehall deejays like Sean Paul, Elephant Man and Beenie Man, that of the Reggae, Hip Hop, R&B, melting pot. Another fruitful success of the VP/Atlantic collaboration, bringing underground sounds straight to the top of the charts and radio play lists.

Wayne is no stranger to recording hits however, having been in the studio for at least 13 years. His first break into production came after a meeting with legendary dub innovator the late King Tubby resulting in his first single 'Long and Lasting Love'. Wayne quickly manifested his songwriting skills and preference for sensitive lyrics about love and friendship, rather than the standard dancehall themes. Despite his passion for writing he often found himself recording covers of well known American pop and soul hits, and found much success with them. He continued to write however and became the strong lyrical partner to Buju Banton (he co-wrote 'Deportees' and 'Murderer' for Buju), and created a bountiful musical relationship with childhood friend David Kelly.

Since, Wayne has found himself working alongside J'son from Soul For Real, NYC's Foxy Brown and the late TLC member Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopez. The next single 'Friend Like Mine' is released on 22nd September.

For images, bios, CDs etc please contact Lucy Whitehead at Ocean on 020 8525 4273 / lucy@ocean.org.uk.

SEYNI (Guinée) New CD & Tour

Whilst dominating a large part of the medieval Mandingo empire in west Africa, the king Sumanguru Kante ,-upon hearing a beautiful melody coming from the sacred royal balafon, gave the name ‘KO YATE’ to Seyni's oldest ancestor.

Since then through all of western Africa ,the KO YATE family have always been ‘griots’ (storytellers) and the balafon (a type of xylophone) the instrument of choice.

At seventeen , Seyni leaves his native Guinée to form the theatrical group ‘ KOTEBA’ in the Ivory Coast. His first album ‘ MOUSSO KO’ and international tours soon follow.

Seyni composes in 1987 the soundtrack for ‘ La Vie Platinée ‘ by Claude Cadiou and appears in the film alongside Mamady KEÏTA.

In 1989, he started the group BDM (Black Dance Music) and their first album in France,’ALLAH NIKI’ (1993) wins them places in numerous festivals such as the Printemps de Bourges and Musiques Métisses in Angouléme, sharing the stage with artists such as Jonny Clegg and ASWAD.

Alseyni ‘Seyni’ Kouyaté is African essence with a Jamaican spirit. His music mixes the song of the balafon with the skank of the reggae, the brass echoing traditional rhythms; it's the Reggae Yankadi .

In 1997 he records the album ‘NANA’ (Micorason/Mélodie) with SOME STLYE BAND from Bordeaux.

For the next four years it's with the group ROOTSABA , playing concerts and festivals in France, Germany and Guinée. Together Seyni and Rootsaba record the album ‘LIMANIYA’ in November 2002 with guest appearance by none other than MANU DIBANGO and produced by Otis M'Baye (ex-manager of Mory Kanté and founder of the Label ‘Micorason’).

Developing the sound of a percussive reggae wherein the balafon sings its melody, and each song an important message, Seyni has invented the Reggae Yankadi. Winning the vote of the press, public and organisers, SEYNi has played in and conquered numerous concerts and Festivals: Nancy Jazz Pulsations, Reggae Sun Ska Festival, Complet Manding, Musique Métisses, Fest ArtFest Memenez Vous, Fête de l'Huma, Fest Art D'afrique, Fest Roots dans la Vallée, Nuit du Reggae Bergerac, Fest In/Off en sable, Germany, Austria, Paris, Grenoble, Montpellier, Limoges, Angoulême, Bordeaux, Mérignac, Toulouse, Avignon, Pau, Nantes, Lille . Sharing the stage with such names as: the Wailers, Toots & the Maytals, Alpha Blondy, LKJ, Culture, Ras Mickael, Lee Perry, Skatalites, Max Roméo, Buju Banton, U Roy, Babamaal, Tiken Jah Fakoly.

After having toured the France far and wide with his Rootsaba companions, Seyni now presents us his new band: ‘YELIBA’ (‘Yeli’ meaning ‘Griot’ and ‘Ba’ meaning ‘important’, or ‘big’).

Hawkeye Scores in 2003

Dancehall artist Hawkeye is having a remarkable year and will gain yet another career milestone with a performance at the upcoming Irie Jamboree.

The DJ, experiencing success in every facet of his career, is getting geared up for a highly anticipated performance at the Irie Jamboree on Sunday, August 24, 2003 in Queens, New York. He intends to thrill fans with an energy filled set consisting of his new hits and signature tunes. At the event, Hawkeye will grace the stage along with a stellar cast of artists including Sean Paul, Wayne Wonder, Alozade, Vegas, Ce’cile, Tony Curtis, Vybz Kartel, Wayne Marshall and many others. The performance will wrap up one of the DJ’s most popular summers. “Irie Jamboree is a top notch concert,” said Hawkeye. “I am happy that I can be a part of it. My fans will not be disappointed.”

Meanwhile, Hawkeye has literally been mashing up the place all year long. He appears on the summer smash ‘Diggy Dialect’ alongside Phife Dawg, former member of A Tribe Called Quest. The single, a track from Phife Dawg’s U Know U Want It EP, features a catchy hook by the DJ. Hawkeye adds his zesty Dancehall flavor to ‘Diggy Dialect’. The song is receiving warm reviews and airplay throughout the Caribbean and the United States. A video for the single will be shot in the near future.

Additionally, Hawkeye has extended his talents beyond Reggae music. To exemplify his versatility, the DJ released the Soca song ‘Vibes’ earlier this year. The song, produced by Barbados disc jockey, Peter “No Stoppin” Coppin increased Hawkeye’s fan base throughout the Caribbean and yielded consistent play during Carnival season. In fact, through the song’s success, Hawkeye performed at standing room only shows in Grenada and Trinidad and Tobago. The song is still being played in heavy rotation. “I felt extremely positive about venturing into Soca music,” said Hawkeye. “From the beginning, I knew the song would do well.”

Throughout 2003, Hawkeye has been riding high on the success of his debut album Bubble and Wine on the Twingy Twanga imprint. Respectively, the single ‘Bubble and Wine’ catapulted to success in 2002, as it had the infamous Diwali rhythm as a backdrop. The album also featured favorites including ‘Ooh Ah Ah’, ‘Twingy Twanga’, ‘Kingston, Jamaica’, ‘All My Ladies’, ‘Gynecology’ and many others. The popularity of the DJ’s album secured performances in key markets throughout the United States.

Hawkeye’s exhilarating debut coupled with hard work and dedication has enabled him to establish a respectable media presence. Hawkeye was recently a guest on radio stations in major markets including New York stations - Irie FM, Hot 97 and WLIB. He also appeared on Washington D.C.’s WMUC and on the nationwide satellite radio station Sirius. During each interview, the artist provided listeners with a candid look at his career and of course a wicked freestyle.

Hawkeye, a former chef by profession, continues to serve up delectable new music. This year alone the DJ can be heard on a number of dynamic tracks including ‘Gal Dem Good’ on the Masterpiece rhythm, ‘Power Saw’ on the Gallop rhythm and ‘Somebody’ on the Coolie Dance rhythm. Finally, the artist will be featured on an upcoming rhythm titled The Hammer by dancehall producer Call Me Shams (Richard Browne).

Fans can expect to see a lot of Hawkeye in the upcoming year. And one should not be shocked by the buzz generated from upcoming rhythms produced by Hawkeye. His production skills already thrive on his very own Katash rhythm, which features tracks by Sizzla, Determine, Beenie Man, Alozade, Zumjay, Danny English, Lady G, General Degree and none other than Hawkeye himself.

Hawkeye started recording music in 1988. However, he exploded onto the scene with his 1997 hit ‘Arrest Mi Officer’. The rest is history. The DJ’s warm personality, innate music skills, witty lyrics and unique style will entitle him to permanent membership in Dancehall music’s ever-growing fraternity.
